about

Meet me by the pleroma reveals the usually inaudible difference tones that result from two pitches sounding together. These “sonic entities” affect our perceptions of dissonance, consonance, and tonality, and they are treated here as harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic material.

At the time I was very interested composing string music with just intonation tuning systems. In this piece the difference tones produced by the players are constantly gliding, making the listener aware that they are using these tones as a tuning guide. The instability and motion reveals a striving towards the "ideal" pitches represented by mathematical intervals. For me the striving is the interesting part.

Recorded in 2009 at the Mills College Littlefield Concert Hall.
